Betting and Craps
How many people play craps at one time?
One of the first rules in craps is that there are only two to eight players
at a table at any given time. Online you will find this number will vary
according to what time of day it is, more people are found to be playing
later afternoon and into the evening.
Offline, you will see that the craps tables are often flooded with people,
while this may appear that many are playing, most are actually spectators
watching who is doing all the winning at the moment.
The game of craps is a game of rolling the dice, to find who can beat
the game of numbers and win money while doing all of this. The shooter
is the person who is rolling the dice, spectators are spectators, and betters
are those who are betting on what the person rolling the dice will get.
Generally online casinos are players against the house, street craps is
not often played online at all.
When the shooter first rolls the dice, the first roll is called the come
out roll.
The shooter will continue rolling the dice as long as they are winning,
when they start losing a new shooter will be called for.
The shooter wins if the come out roll is 7 or 11 and loses if gets craps
(2,3 or 12). If he gets 4,5,6,8,9 or 10, this number is established as
the point. If he obtains the point again before seven is rolled he wins.
If he rolls 7 before the point he loses and the player to his left is handled
the dices and becomes the next shooter.
When the shooter establishes the point the puck is placed on the corresponding
field with its white side showing. It remains here until the shooter either
obtains his point or rolls 7 after which the puck is placed - with the
black side showing - on the field marked with 12. This is so there is no
confusion in what is going on at the table with each roll of the dice.
White side up: The game is ongoing and the placement
of the puck indicates the point.
Black side up: The next roll will be the come out roll.
This is when the new game is going to start.
Opening bets in craps, placed just before the come out roll, are called
the pass line bet. This is just when the come out roll happens. Pass line
bets immediately win when the shooter's come out roll is 7 or 11, and will
lose when the come out roll is 2, 3, or 12.
To give you a bit of lingo here:
2 (one on each die) are called snake eyes
3 (two and a one) are called cross-eyes
In addition, 12 are called boxcars
When rolling the dice and if 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled on the come
out roll (the first roll for the player) that number becomes what is then
called "the point."
The puck labeled ON shows that the point has been established, and is
located on the craps table over the box for the number rolled as the point: "4,
5, SIX, 8, NINE, or 10".
The shooter, or player, now keeps rolling the dice until he rolls the
point or 7 to end the round.
And if the shooter rolls the point first, a pass line bet wins. But if,
the shooter rolls a 7 first (i.e. "sevens out"), a pass line
bet loses. It can seem confusing at first but you will quickly catch on
in no time at all.
